Google Alerts
I had never heard of Google Alerts before today. Well, maybe I had heard of it, but I had no idea what it was. I just assumed it was kind of like a calendar, but it's so much better! In my free time, I like to check on things in the news; celebrities, happenings in the world, politics, etc., so this was great for me. I chose to make a Google Alert for Syria. There is a lot happening over there and I have been trying to follow it, but it is hard because once I have time to look, I have missed a lot of information. Google Alerts helps me out with that problem. I was able to set up how often I want emails sent and that I only want the best information. I have already learned of new things happening there just by starting this alert. This can be used in class rooms for group projects. The students can choose a subject and have news updates on it sent to their email instantly so they do not have to spend quite as much time searching for it. It would, however, have to be a subject that is "hot" and in the news often. Great tool for sure.

iGoogle
iGoogle is a great homepage- type system. I was able to choose things that I found interesting, a cute theme, and my location. This way, I get my weather, things occurring near my area, and also, the things that I liked (news, entertainment, music). I went ahead and made it my homepage because I enjoyed it so much. It also gives me shortcuts too many things. This is going to make being on the internet less of a time consuming thing. I can get on, check my email, see the news, check the weather, and then get back to reality! This can be used in classrooms, but I only really see one way. The teacher can create a page with their school email and allow access by the students and they can (with permission) upload things that go with that weeks lesson. It could also be a good resource when talking about recent topics. Very neat tool.

Thing #11
I decided to add two more awesome RSS feeds to my google reader:

I really enjoy using the Google Blog Search. This could be because I am so very used to using Google. I find it to be very simple; just type in something and BAM, results. Change up the wording a little bit, and new results arrive. I think that Topix.net was most confusing. It wasn't difficult to use, but I just found that I didn't really know what was going on. Yes, it was more about recent topics and etc., but when searching for something specific, I didn't really understand what the results were. I didn't really find much using this tool. I found plenty of feeds that I think will be useful. I want to bake more and be more crafty. The others are for things I would love to do and places that I want to go. Some are for inspiration and enjoyment. I do have a feed about special education that I find interesting and hopefully I can use it when I get into my career.

I really enjoy how simple and easy RSS feeds are. I can just go and find a blog that I enjoy, click a button, and it shows up on my feed and I am able to follow it from there; hassle free. I think it would be fairly easy and fun to have a lesson on something and find some corresponding blogs with RSS and add them to one google reader that the students and I can access to learn more inside and outside of class. This way, we're always learning. Having the students find their own that goes along with the subject and adding it in would also be easy to use as an assignment. The ones that I chose for this "Thing" are pretty much for my personal use and I hope to gain a lot from them. Teachers can use this technology to their advantages with their students, parents, even faculty, to stay connected and on the "same page".

Thing #9
This cite comes equipped with many different shapes so I automatically thought it might be a sweet idea to print out shapes like triangles and squares with their properties listed as words inside them and post them around the classroom. This would also be a good reward for the children.
This is my bestfriend and I out to eat one night. I've always wanted to create a scrap book and this just might get me started. I really thought (with parental consent of course) this would be a neat idea for like a classroom yearbook with all the kids and random quotes throughout the course of the years activities, assignments, and memories.This could even be used as a project in lots of different subjects where the students tell a story.
It has all sorts of different signs, templates, pictures, and other cool ideas to post things onto. I just chose some random words I would put on my bulletin board at home! I think students would enjoy making signs for the classroom or for their own rooms. It could also be fun to use when teaching students about different types of signs (stop, yield, walk, caution, etc.)
I found all to be fun and hard to quit! Great resources! :)

This is probably one of the neatest things I have ever done! I played around with some of the other Flickr mashups and enjoyed them all, but this is definitely my favorite. I would love to print this one out and have it laminated and cut so it can actually be used as a puzzle. For the others, I think it would be a neat project to do with students for their name on the Spell with Flickr one. Personally, all of these would be fun and cute to do! WOO HOO

These are some items from my apartment and they all have some sort of meaning to me. First, are all of the old items on the shelf. There is an elephant, tiki head, Buddah statue, 1950s video camera, an old photo camera, a 1915 "Chorter German Poems" book, and a 1916 copy of "Shakespeare's Julius Caesar". I love collecting old things and these are just a few that I have here with me at school. Next would be the flowers. They are not actually my flowers, they are my roommates, but I do love them and think they're beautiful. Last, but definitely not least, is a piece of art work I created for a class here at APSU and I am so very proud of it! It is called crayon art and I love it! It took some time, but I think it came out quite nicely.
Flickr was actually must easier than I thought it would be. I was able to upload more than one picture at once and they uploaded amazingly fast! I would love to use Flickr in the classroom for parents to see what they're children have done in class instead of them only getting to see it when it is sent home or during parent teacher conferences. I use a website called Pinterest and it is also a photo sharing website, but it isn't really personal photos, it's more like things that you enjoy that you want to "re-pin". I absolutely love Pinterest, but I haven't used Flickr enough to really compare the two. I don't really have any concerns as of right now, especially since I do the same thing on Facebook (even though it is private). The pictures I uploaded to Flickr are only material things, no people.

Thing #5
To me, Web 2.0 means many different things. First, I realize just by using it in this class, that I can do and find almost anything that I want to just by searching a keyword. It is so interesting to me. Second, i just think that it is brilliant. I am obviously young enough to have been doing most of my research for school projects and papers with technology, though I did have some classes where I was not allowed and had to go out and get the books to do whatever I needed to. This isn't impossible now since I live here on campus and can come to the library and check out books if I need to, but it is a hassle. I have to make time between classes to go search for the book and then check it out (adding to the already ridiculous weight of my backpack) and then hopefully remember to return it before I am fined. However, when I was younger and without means of getting to the libraries and other resources it was extremely difficult. Teachers can't be sure that children will be able to get to any resources outside of school and remember to get the right ones and return them on time. It just makes it simpler on students, families, and teachers. Technology has definitely changed our lives and Web 2.0 has changed the way, at least I, live life, get through college, and hopefully help with stress out in the real world with real jobs.
In the future, I think schools will rely a lot on not only the internet, but also Web 2.0. I am not sure that they will become dependent upon it, but I think it will definitely be a big part of instruction and assignments. There are videos, music, workshops, worksheets, ideas, knowledge, facts, readings, and social connections out there that a normal classroom just couldn't give the students (or even the teacher). I think that it is all about expanding the horizon, and Web 2.0 does just that and more.

Thing #4
I think commenting brings people together. Blogs are there to help begin the process of a community and comments help it remain intact. When a person creates a blog, it's there for the world to read and to get people's input. A lot of people have blogs where they are asking for people replies because they are not sure how to handle or do something. I really think that blogging and commenting does create specific communities when we use them. If you want to know about "traveling" look up and comment on a traveling blog. This keeps the blogger and other people going and then everyone can learn something.
I learned that you should reward comments and while I've never thought of this, it is a really good idea! You should definitely reward them if you hope to get more comments. I also learned that you should invite of prompt comments. These articles were full of awesome blogging/comments ideas.

1. I chose to follow Ashlee Boyd's blog. While looking through Ashlee's blogs, I came across her Flickr post, Thing #7. I share the love of Nashville as well. I have yet to find another city that I can connect with or be so comfortable in. I enjoyed her other posts as well, and her blog is adorable! 2. I chose to follow Tiffany Anderson's blog. Tiffany's blog is first and foremost, very precious. Her background, font, avatar, colors, are well chosen and go together great! I think her blog name "from chalkboards to smart-boards" is very clever. She has a post from the Flickr mashup's about inspiring and I think that it is wonderful.
